Same-day test helps doctors detect hidden infections in critically ill children
A same-day test called metagenomics has been used to detect hidden and drug-resistant infections in more than 100 critically ill children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Doctors say it can identify bacteria, viruses and fungi from one sample and has helped some children get the right treatment sooner, and it is being rolled out to around 30 intensive care units across the UK.
