Runners from Scarborough, Leeds and Sheffield are preparing to take on the Yorkshire Marathon course through York and its villages, with many raising money for health causes close to them. Ellie Freer is running the full marathon for the first time, having recovered from heart surgery, while Alex Hill is running without a kidney removed nine months earlier.
Cambridge University professor Patrick Barrie retained his world tiddlywinks singles title after beating Dave Lockwood of the US in a seven-hour match at a pub in Cambridge. Barrie said he was pleased with the win, while Lockwood praised his opponent and said he was glad to have given him a good challenge.
