A new volunteer group in East Kent has begun helping pigeons whose feet have become tangled in discarded string and hair. Trained volunteers in Canterbury and Thanet are carefully removing the material, often without taking the birds out of their flocks. The founders hope to change the reputation of pigeons and encourage others to join in.
Lily Herniman, 18, has volunteered at the UK Wild Otter Trust near South Molton in north Devon for three years. She was named Countryfile Young Countryside Champion at the BBC Food and Farming Awards in Belfast, and she said she was completely overjoyed.
A chimney sweep in Polperro, Cornwall, spotted an owl trapped inside a stove during a routine clean and carefully freed it. The bird flew off from the back garden after being released unharmed.
A family of swans seen in a Corby town centre garden was safely moved by charity volunteers to a lake about a mile away. The volunteers carefully bagged the two adults and four cygnets and drove them to a suitable local lake, where they also cleared some brambles and fishing lines.
