A new live music venue called The Backroom has opened inside Wakefield's Hop and Cobble pub to give emerging musicians a purpose-built space to perform. Its founders hope it will help revive the city's grassroots gigging scene, and it will host a weekly grassroots night and work with local colleges on production and engineering skills.

Emyr Morris Jones, known as Emyr Bara Caws, is retiring after nearly 50 years in Welsh theatre. He joined Theatr Bara Caws in 1982 and has worked on 142 different shows with the company.
