Harold Hodgson, a World War Two RAF veteran, celebrated his 107th birthday at his care home in Darlington with a sing-along. More than 300 cards from friends and strangers were sent to The Grange care home, and the Royal British Legion presented him with a certificate of appreciation.
British adventurer Karl Bushby has finished a 28-year walk around the world by reaching his home city of Hull. He was greeted by his mother and a crowd of well-wishers as he completed the final stretch on foot.
The Royal British Legion broke its London Poppy Day fundraising record by raising more than £1.7m in one day of collections across the capital. Around 4,000 armed forces personnel and civilian volunteers collected donations at stations and other locations, and military bands and choirs performed at more than 20 stations. The money supports serving personnel, veterans and their families.
Amy Leslie, from north London, keeps unopened letters left by her mother Danielle, who died of breast cancer when Amy was six. Danielle and her mother Sylvie set up the breast cancer charity Future Dreams, which now runs a house offering support to people affected by the disease.
